Contestant Education

An interesting fact: most contestants have not competed in rodeos prior to joining IGRA. As there are so many new contestants, several of the rodeos on the circuit offer schools to teach event basics to rookies. These schools are sometimes held immediately prior to a rodeo, or during the remainder of the year.

The Road Runner Regional Rodeo (Phoenix), held in January each year, usually offers a pre-rodeo school. The Bay Area Chapter of GSGRA (San Francisco) also has an excellent roughstock school each summer at Bill Lyle’s ranch in Morgan Hill, CA. Bill is a former professional bull rider and current GSGRA stock contractor, and usually has courses on bull and steer riding, as well as chutedogging. He is an excellent teacher.

Most rodeos offer a school from time-to-time. You can check the IGRA rodeo calendar and visit each rodeo’s web site to find out if a school has been scheduled.

Roughstock competitors may wish to consider a professional school to learn fundamentals before competing in a rodeo. Sankey Rodeo Schools offers training for new bareback and saddle bronc riders, bull riders and bullfighters, taught by two-time National Finals Rodeo Bull Riding Average Winner Lyle Sankey.
